2018 The Year of Perge

Perge is an ancient city that is the capital of the Pamphylia region, located within the Aksu area, 16 km east of Antalya. This is one of the most important cities of Pamphylia, because it is on the Aksu River (Kestros), where a commercial road that passes through the Pamfilia region from east to west through the Pamidya region through Antalya and at that time it was convenient for transportation. It was built during the Hellenistic period and continued its presence during the Roman emperor and late antiquity. The most important reason for this is that this ancient city is not close to the coast, so far from the robbery and pirate invasion, its development is continuous and to date it has been able to achieve a much better state than other ancient cities. Most of the fortress walls, pavilions, bastions and gates around the lower city are intact. Speaking about the walls of the acropolis, Perge is a valuable source of information on the ancient military architecture. The ancient city of Perge with the above qualities is offered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
